Bacterial and Parasitic Infections

Bacterial and parasitic infections are becoming a significant concern for both humans and animals worldwide. These infections range from mild to severe and may sometimes produce no noticeable symptoms. Common parasitic diseases include ascariasis, while other frequently reported infections include toxoplasmosis, hookworm disease, trichomoniasis, and several intestinal worm infections.

Parasites and bacteria may enter the body through contaminated food, water, soil, or environmental exposure, potentially causing both short-term and long-term health complications.

Common Types of Infections

  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Ascariasis
  • Hookworm Disease
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Various intestinal worm infections

How Do Parasites and Bacteria Affect the Body?

Once these microorganisms invade the body, they may interfere with several important biological functions. Their effects can vary depending on the type of infection and the individual’s health condition.

  • Changes in blood cell production
  • Digestive system dysfunction
  • Altered food absorption and nutrient utilization
  • Changes in enzyme activity
  • Reduced reproductive capacity in animals
  • General weakening of the immune system

How Can You Get Infected?

The following factors may increase the risk of bacterial or parasitic infection:

  • Visiting areas where parasites are common
  • International travel
  • Consuming contaminated food or water
  • Eating undercooked meat or animal products
  • Poor sanitation and hygiene
  • Young children or elderly individuals
  • Weakened immune system
  • HIV/AIDS infection
  • Working with livestock or animals
  • Frequent contact with soil or waste materials

Ivermectin for Parasitic Infection Treatment

Ivermectin was discovered during the 1970s from a microorganism isolated in Japan. It has become a widely used antiparasitic medication for both veterinary and human medicine.

It is commonly used to treat intestinal parasites such as hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. Ivermectin belongs to the class of anti-helminthic medicines that work by disrupting the nervous and muscular system of susceptible parasites, leading to paralysis and death of the organism.

Herxheimer Reaction

During treatment, rapid destruction of parasites or bacteria may lead to a temporary inflammatory response commonly referred to as the Herxheimer Reaction.

Symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Flushing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Temporary worsening of skin lesions

If symptoms become severe, medical evaluation is recommended before altering any medication regimen.
